The Foundation in Glória do Ribatejo

The history of Setronix (Sociedade de Estudos e Empreendimentos de Telecomunicações, S.A.) begins in the setting of Glória do Ribatejo. The founders, Eng. Barbosa and Eng. Aleixo, drew on the experience they had gained at Raret (“Voice of America”) to identify an opportunity in supporting local radio stations. In its early days, working out of a small workshop, Setronix manufactured bespoke towers with a team of four permanent staff, supported by Raret specialists who collaborated outside their working hours.

Consolidation in Marinhais

The need for better working conditions led Setronix to move to Marinhais. This relocation enabled a complete logistical service: the company handled the entire process, from manufacturing through to final installation. It was common for just one person to remain at the workshop, whilst the rest of the team carried out installations on site.

The Berlin Wall

The fall of the Berlin Wall had an unexpected impact on Setronix. Raret was no longer needed, and so Setronix had to seek out new markets on which to focus.

Public Works Licence

In that year, Setronix obtained Licence no. 18434 as a Public Works Contractor in the categories relevant to its activity, issued by the current IMPIC – Institute for Public Markets, Real Estate and Construction.

Transition and Resilience

Transition and Resilience

Rigour and Accreditation: National and NATO

Under the influence of Eng. Lopes dos Santos, Setronix specialised in projects for the Defence sector. The requirement to operate on Portuguese Navy and NATO bases (Monsanto, Sagres, the Azores) called for stringent security clearance of staff, raising the company’s security standards.

The Rollout of 3G and Reinvention

Setronix played a key role as a partner in deploying Optimus’s 3G network. In 2001, the current CEO, Nuno Justino, joined the company as Technical Manager for the ACE. Even with the sector’s freeze in 2003, Setronix showed its agility by identifying new lines of business, preserving its operational structure.

Certifications

A significant milestone for Setronix was its certification in Quality – NP EN ISO 9001, Environment – NP EN ISO 14001, and Occupational Health & Safety – NP EN ISO 45001 (formerly OHSAS 18001).

Certifications

The Milestone of Digital Television and Radio

Setronix played a pivotal role in the switch from analogue to digital, carrying out the installation of 80% of the DTT stations and the bulk of the Rádio Comercial network. The company specialised in the strengthening and dismantling of structures, reusing materials and ensuring the sustainability of the production cycle. It also earned the SME Excellence ’10 Status awarded by IAPMEI.

Technical Innovation and Setronix Patents:

Setronix’s distinctive edge lies in its proprietary engineering. The company patented a specific guyed tower, fitted with flanges at the joints and two anti-torsion devices. This robustness made it the technical solution of choice for strengthening or replacing network infrastructure with weaknesses.

Internationalisation

Its technical expertise as a specialist subcontractor also led to the creation of Setronix Algeria and to projects in Timor, Cape Verde, England and France, encompassing Broadcast projects, Antenna Swaps and Site Construction. Setronix was involved in the modernisation project for the HF antenna arrays of the Portuguese Navy.

Internationalisation

Fibre Optics

Establishment of the fibre optics department, reinforcing the company’s capacity to meet the market’s growing demands. The company was also involved in the SIVICC project, consisting of fixed radar towers supplemented by thermal/TV cameras along the entire Portuguese coastline.

New Leadership

In 2016, the company welcomed a new management team, relocating its headquarters to Vialonga and focusing operations on outsourced manufacturing management and cutting-edge engineering. It continues to take part in major projects, such as the construction of GMDSS stations on the HF and VHF bands for the Ministry of Defence and the upgrading of the various operators’ networks in Portugal.

New Ventures

The company, already established in the telecommunications market, branches out into the wind tower sector.
